Who is she: Contemporary  Perfumer

Sophia Grojsman is a Belarus-born American perfumer . She is the senior perfumer and Vice President of International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), a perfume and fragrance company with annual sales exceeding two billion dollars (USD). Sophia Grojsman has created over 70 magnificent perfumes for a variety of brands, including Calvin Klein, HRH Princess Elizabeth, Celine, and Clinique, the majority of which are her signature rose scent.

Early Life and Education

Sofia was born in 1945 in Lubcha, Beruras, a former Soviet republic. Sophia was enamored with the garden from an early age, and her favorite flowers were roses and violets. Roses smelled wonderful to her, and she has always thought of them as feminine and romantic. Her sense of smell was so strong at a young age that her mother would take her along for grocery shopping to ensure they got the freshest produce.

Her family relocated to Poland in 1960, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in analytical inorganic chemistry. They later immigrated to America in 1965, where she began her career as a lab assistant at International Flavors and Fragrances in 1966.

Career

Sofia began her career at IFF in 1966 as a lab assistant to senior perfumer Elle Fox. Elle Fox would take Sophia under her wing and teach her everything she knew about scents and fragrance creation. As a result of her hard work and dedication, she attracted the attention of well-known performers. Some of her mentors include Ernest Shiftan and Josephine Catapano, who were instrumental in helping her realize her greatness.

Sophia worked her way up from a lab assistant to a senior perfume and later the company’s vice president.

Contributions to the perfume industry

Sophia Grojsman is a gifted perfumer, a source of pride for the cosmetics industry, and a gem to the world. Sophia Grojsman, at the age of 76, has accomplished a great deal. She was born with a keen sense of smell, which she has honed to produce her extraordinary abilities.

Sophia Grojsman was the first perfumer to reverse the traditional proportions of ingredients in perfumes, after discovering that an overdose of one ingredient could propel it to the top of the structure. She combined this ground-breaking technique with traditional perfume structures to create a truly unique aesthetic that would forever change the way perfume was made. She was also known for her never-ending fascination with roses, which she incorporates into nearly all of her works.

Her creative energy and passion blossoms as she goes on to create some of the world's best-selling fragrances, including Calvin Klein's Eternity for Women, Gloria Vanderbilt's Vanderbilt, Yves Saint Laurent's Paris among others.

Honors and achievements

Sophia Grojsman is the winner of the perfume industry’s most prestigious awards. In 1994 Sofia Grojsman received the Cosmetic Executive Women's Achiever Award for her lifetime achievement in cosmetics and perfumery and in  1996 the Living Legend Award from the American Society of Perfumers.
