ALBERTO MORILLAS

Name: Alberto Morillas

Gender: Male

D.O.B: 1950

Home Country: Spain

Status: Alive

Residence: Geneva

Employment: Firmenich, Swiss Fragrance and Flavor Firm

Alberto Morillas is a leading Spanish perfumer. He works at Firmenich, a Swiss fragrance and flavor firm as well as owns his personal line, Mizensir. Some of his well-known masterpieces include Calvin Klein CK One, Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò, Skinn and Marc Jacobs Daisy.

Early life

Morillas was born in 1950 in Spain. His childhood in the captivating province of Seville was a natural perfume bottle, encapsulating the most exquisite fragrances; a muse for developing his inquisitive nature. This muse captivated Morillas so profoundly, that he had no other desire to do anything else aside experiment and make perfumes.

At the age of ten, Morillas relocated to Switzerland and went on to later study for two years at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Geneva. At the tender age of 20, Morillas was already testing his alchemy in perfume production and caught some attention due to his self-education in developing and honing his talent in perfumery skills. After joining Firmenich in 1970, the perfume master has gone on to create nearly 7000 perfumes. In 1975 he made his way to the A list of the industry perfumers with the creation of Must de Cartier, the jewelry company's first fragrance. Despite his accolades, Morillas inspiration for perfumery began from modest beginnings.

Morillas shares that his mother’s favorite perfume Rochas- a fashion, beauty, and perfume house- founded in 1925 by French designer Marcel Rochas (best known for its Femme perfume), was one of his inspirations while growing up. Furthermore, Morillas was cited in a Vogue article saying that French perfumer Jean-Paul Guerlain was another source of inspiration in his journey of perfume production.

Contributions to the perfume industry

Despite perfumery’s evolution in the modern era, Morillas style and techniques continue to stand out. He is known for using his knowledge of perfume history, fusing natural and modern synthetic techniques, assisted by his long-standing partnership with research and development chemists, to create true works of art. As Morillas states, “Perfumery is the mirror of society. I am the artist who interprets these emotions”.

Morillas’ contribution to the industry and his ability to blend the polarities of perfumery earned him the prestigious Prix François Coty award in 2003. Furthermore, Morillas was recognized as the Master Perfumer with the acclaimed Lifetime Achievement Award - the first perfumer awarded this by the Fragrance Foundation.

In 1997 Morillas and his wife began a line of scented candles called Mizensir. They aimed to capture scents in wax, which required extensive knowledge about raw materials and their uses, as well as testing how these scents interacted with the properties of wax. The business grew to offer 80 different candles with Morillas expanding the brand to further include 17 perfumes in 2015. He also collaborated with Penhaligon to create a custom perfumery service called Bespoke by Alberto Morillas, which features in Salon de Parfum Harrods, London.

“There is always doubt even when we’ve learned everything there is to know. A formula is like a well-written sentence: you can choose from a thousand beautiful words, however, it is the emotion with which they are brought together, that makes it impactful."
