The opening of Anaïs Anaïs captivates with a bold and waxy hyacinth note, conjuring childhood memories of hyacinths blooming in our garden at home. Accompanying this is a vibrant, almost funereal lily note, complemented by the soapy and green essence of lily-of-the-valley. The background is adorned with a hazy greenness from galbanum, a vintage-style touch absent in the reformulation. Honeysuckle adds a sweet and pollen-like facet, resulting in a more intricate and less soapy top accord than its modern counterpart.
As the fragrance develops, a powdery bouquet takes center stage, predominantly composed of white florals. These white blooms, bold and lush, exude a sweet innocence rather than carnality. Muted tuberose, clean jasmine, and the muguet note from the opening become more apparent. Rose and iris enter the composition, enriching the powderiness while adding depth to the white florals.
The drydown in the original formulation surpasses that of the reformulation. A soft yet well-defined chypre base emerges, led by a delightful vintage-style hint of oakmoss. Woody notes intertwine with a slightly animalic and musky amber accord. A touch of patchouli imparts an earthy quality. The powdery florals remain at the forefront, beautifully enhanced by the chypre foundation. This stands in stark contrast to the thin, aquatic, and soapy drydown of L'Original, which simply dissipates. Instead, the original fades into a musky, earthy skin scent with a lingering trace of powdery florals. Sillage and longevity exhibit a moderate presence.
Final Thoughts
