Packaging
The Kelly Caleche packaging is the first sign that the perfume is an olfactory representation of the Kelly bag. The fragrance is housed in an interesting bottle that has a silver padlock on the cap, like the bag does, and the box features the Hermes Horse carrying a Kelly bag in its “caleche”, the French word for carriage.
Review
Kelly Caleche by Hermes is a fresh and green floral scent with a touch of leather that makes it an interesting and chic fragrance for daily wear. Upon opening, the perfume presents a green and vegetal note of roses, but not the jammy ones, and a mix of lily of the valley, mimosa, and tuberose that is tempered by iris, giving it a beige or grey tone instead of pink. While the floral heart is present, it is fresh and green, without any indolic notes.
The citrus accord that opens the fragrance is fresh and light, and shortly after, the unusual floral notes on top of the leather base create an intriguing scent. The hay-like narcissus and the hint of green floral muguet add to the complexity of the perfume. The leather note is barely detectable at first, but it emerges steadily as the scent develops. It is smooth and clean, reminiscent of a new handbag, and becomes more animalic as it fades into the drydown.
The powdery rose and iris that emerge during the development of the perfume complement the leather nicely. The floral-leather accord remains, becoming a single note as it fades into a suede leather skin scent. Sillage and longevity are moderate, with a subtle drydown that lasts for hours.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Kelly Caleche is a feminine-leaning, trans-seasonal, daytime scent that is nonchalant and nicely formed. However, while it is a decent fragrance, there are other options from Hermes that are more noteworthy, such as Galop for a rich floral-leather or Twilly for an unusual floral scent. Nevertheless, the leather dry-down of Kelly Caleche is of the finest kind, expressed with a surfeit of elegance that is reminiscent of Frederic Malle's Rose & Cuir.
