Packaging

The packaging of the perfume Cachet by Prince Matchabelli is rather plain and unremarkable. The silver cap and transparent bottle with golden juice do not really stand out or catch the eye. The packaging appears to be lacking in creativity and originality. While a transparent bottle can be a good way to showcase the color of the perfume, the overall design of the package does not seem to be particularly distinctive or memorable.

Review

Cachet by Prince Matchabelli is a classic fragrance from 1970 that recalls the era's iconic scents like Aliage and Jontue. This unisex perfume opens with aldehydes and continues with a big load of oakmoss, making it more unisex than feminine. The grassy green scent may challenge those who prefer sweet/fruity perfumes, but the effort is worth it. The spices and leather with civet are wrapped in a dusky, dusty layer of galbanum and vetiver, evoking the feeling of walking through fields covered in fog.

The first impression of Cachet is one of sweetness, but not in the candy or floral sense. It is redolent of the sweetness of newly mown hay in the sun. The grass, galbanum, and green notes all blended together to create this effect. Later on, the rose emerges, followed by a slightly sweaty skin scent, which could be attributed to the leather or civet notes. The orris and vetiver gave the fragrance an earthy sweetness.

This vintage fragrance is a gorgeous, bright, slightly mossy, green, floral chypre that was marketed as a "chameleon scent." It was said to smell different on everyone who wore it, but we now know that most perfumes have this quality to some extent. Nevertheless, Cachet remains a recognizable fragrance. The 1970s were full of masculine-edged mossy chypres, but Cachet stands out as my favorite from that era.

Final Thoughts

Cachet by Prince Matchabelli is a classic scent that captures the essence of the 1970s era. Its grassy, green notes and spicy, leathery undertones make it a unisex fragrance that is more challenging than typical sweet or fruity perfumes. However, those who make the effort to appreciate its complexity will be rewarded with a beautiful, individual fragrance that stands out from the crowd.
